What is llms.txt, and do you need one?

A short plain-text file that describes your site to AI tools.

llms.txt is a plain text file at yoursite.com/llms.txt. It gives a short description of your business and links to your most useful pages.

01 / The format

A short map of your important pages

The llms.txt proposal describes a Markdown file that gives a concise introduction and links to useful pages. It can sit at the root of a site, like example.com/llms.txt. It is a proposal for agents that choose to read it, not a required search setting. Read the proposal ↗

# Sample Clinic Software

> Booking and billing software for clinics with 1 to 10 doctors in Pune.

## Main pages

- [Services](https://example.com/services): booking, billing and reminders
- [FAQ](https://example.com/faq): setup, support and common questions
- [Contact](https://example.com/contact): how to reach the team
The title identifies the business; the short description states its scope; the links point to fuller, maintained pages.
02 / The priority

The linked pages still have to do the work

Good use

Offer a small, accurate map of your site, then keep it current when your services or URLs change.

Weak use

Publishing a polished index while the service pages remain vague, contradictory or out of date.

Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode have no additional technical requirement beyond ordinary Search eligibility. A special file does not replace useful, accessible pages. Google Search Central ↗

03 / Try it

Make a version you can maintain

  1. List your three to six most useful pages.Use the URLs visitors can open today.
  2. Write one factual sentence about the business.Name the service, audience and location only if each is accurate.
  3. Check the output against the site.Every description in the file should agree with the linked page.
